It's just not fair to name names at present, since no-one's really exempt from the general slow-down. The last three sales I've been at have been deadly quiet, except for the occasional exceptional specimen or anything with a good history of selling and at sensible money - except all the bidding for those cars puts them past sensible money.

Brightwells ran a classic car sale on what would normally be a 4x4 day, in part an indication of the general shortage of good stock but also a sign that just because it's quiet doesn't mean all the money's disappeared. A dealer described it to me as the 'phony war' phase. We're still waiting to see if we've scared ourselves with the budget, with the football, with the summer: the market's poised like a little kid who's just punted a ball into somewhere it shouldn't be, and we're waiting to see if the adults yell at us or laugh.

So for now, we sit and wait.
